This is a unique painting in that it was a collaborative effort with visitors to my open studio. I had just finished the underpainting of a variety of rose called a 'Rainbow Sorbet'. I invited open studio guests to grab any number of acrylic paint pens I made available and write whatever they wished - as long as it had something to do with 'rainbows'. Their thoughts, quotes and lyrics peek through some of the layers of the finished painting, creating an interesting and thoughtful result.

Barrel Cactus blossoms when caught at just the right time

What says “spring” more eloquently than daffodils? I was mesmerized by the way the sunlight seemed to light these blooms from within, creating a wonderful interplay of shadows and layers.

My mother-in-law plants the most beautiful flowers every year at her summer home in Canada. All who visit get to enjoy the artful
display ~ unless of course the deer get there first. Apparently flowers are deer delicacies, and their sunrise visits are the bane of her existence every summer. This begonia escaped with its life, much
to my delight.

I started this piece by creating an abstract background upon which I wrote many verses and scriptures having to do with flowers and beauty. On top of that I created this painting of a orange globe mallow. This original painting was donated to and sold at the University of Arizona "Fresh Paint" gala.

This Mexican Gold Poppy was only one of
thousands forming a field of wildflowers the
spring of 2005 near Picacho Peak. An awe inspiring sight indeed, but even more delightful were the strong shadows being cast by the many stamen in each flower. This particular shadow evoked a feeling of playfulness and mirth. I was immediately
reminded of Peter Pan’s mischievous shadow as it seemed to be attempting to thumb it’s nose at the flower and embark on an adventure of it’s own

I was invited to visit a friend's garden last spring; to sit, enjoy,
sketch and photograph the beautiful flowers and vegetables
that were coming to life after a long winter's rest. The
interesting shapes and patterns created by the petals of this
‘just-opening’ marigold inspired the painting "Heart’s Desire".

In my effort to make this painting especially unique, I incorporated three different new techniques (to me anyway); acrylic transfer, matte medium for texture and copper metallic glaze.
• On top of the painted background, I have added an acrylic transfer of information I found online about solar energy and the sun. After finding the information I wanted, I printed it out, got an old-fashioned photocopy made of it then painted 3 coats of clear acrylic medium on top. Once all the top layers were dry, I turned the sheets over and wet the plain paper back with water from a spray bottle. Over and over I used my fingers to rub off the layers of paper until nothing was left but the text embedded into the (semi) clear acrylic sheet. I used more gloss medium to adhere the text to the background.
• Then, I used blue easy-release painting tape to create sun "rays" coming out from behind the cactus blossom. I used a palette knife to scrape matte medium over the tape and pulled up the tape revealing the “rays” in relief.
• To create depth I painted on a copper glaze, then wiped areas off with cheese cloth. I also spattered copper glaze radiating out from the center of the blossom.
The name was inspired by a particularly spectacular sunrise I witnessed in February. I am rarely awake in time to see a sunrise, much less see one that literally took my breath away with it's beauty and vivid REDNESS. I believe it was Providential that the one morning I was up, I was blessed with such a sight.
I possess a 'gift' (or blessing or quality) that I only recently discovered has a name. Synesthesia. According to Wikipedia, "Synesthesia is is a neurological condition in which
stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway."
In my particular type of Synesthesia, I "see" sound when I have my eyes closed. I started thinking that if I have the ability to "see" sound, perhaps there are other people who can "hear" color; and thus the name "Did You Hear The Sunrise?"

I had never purchased freesias before, so when a friend gave me a bouquet, the first thing that struck me was their exquisite scent. We
talked about just how heavenly they smelled, and a few days later she called me to tell me she had dreamed I had painted them and named the painting "Heaven Scent"....so how could I resist?!

After painting “Heart’s Desire” I couldn’t help but feel that I wasn’t done. There were so many more shapes, shadows and treasures hidden within the marigold’s ‘just-opening’ petals that begged to be explored. I decided to re-discover this flower in a more all encompassing way, “Hidden in Me” being the result. I think I’m done now.

I have dedicated this painting to my late brother-in-law. Hope can be a fleeting feeling when faced with any number overwhelming situations. I hope that this painting will help demonstrate that hope can prevail even in the darkest of moments. In addition to traditional acrylic paints I have also incorporated two different interference colors which create a special 'glow' when seen in person. A special thanks to my friend Susan W. for providing a beautiful reference photo of a water lily for this painting.

Purple Iris is one of my favorite flowers to paint. I purposely tried to leave my mind open to potential names until after the Tucson Open Studio Tour in November of 2011. I asked people who attended to submit their ideas for names, and it was really fun to hear them as they thought out loud and brainstormed the name they thought was appropriate. The resulting name is actually
the inspiration from four of those wonderful people who took the time to submit name ideas. They all had names associated with angels and wings, with more than one referencing a specific
scripture: Isaiah 6:2. Thank you to Victoria H, Cheryl H., Molly N. & Susan W. for your inspiration.

One of my dear friends presented this Caribbean Lily to me as a “show warming” gift during my first local solo exhibition. I had never seen a plant like it before and was intrigued by the
symmetry, color and “halo” effect of the small bluish-purple blooms, combined with the intensity and luster of the green leaves.

Shortly after Christmas I was in the grocery store and saw the most beautiful pots of blue hydrangeas. I brought one home with me and over the next few days was captivated by the neon glow they possessed when the sunlight was at just the right

Iris’ are one of my favorite flowers and were the inspiration of both “Delicate Dance” and “Quietly Unfurled”. The purple and yellow iris is just one example of God’s use of complimentary colors to add ‘punch’ to the design.

When we moved into our home 20 years ago, we had 5 rosebushes in our backyard. I have managed to kill all but one, and the one that remains continues to put out the most beautiful roses in spite of my black thumb. These roses defy color definition, as they are variations of pink, peach, salmon and yellow all within the same bloom. I never tire of looking at them – and their scent is divine too! I currently have two ‘Canyon de la Rosa’ paintings, this being the second in the series; both of the same rose bloom, just different views or sections. I can envision at least two more to come.

I spent hours last spring taking photographs of the butterflies in the Tucson Botanical Garden butterfly exhibit. I finally had to leave when I thought I might pass out from the heat and humidity – those of you who have been there know what I’m taking about! This particular butterfly seemed exclusively
interested in a beautiful hibiscus that not only matched it perfectly in color, but in symmetry as well. It made me think of the saying “imitation is the most sincere form of flattery”.

Aptenia is a common succulent used in landscaping – each tiny flower is only about ½ inch in diameter. I had always overlooked these little gems until one morning after the sprinkler system shut off, I noticed the sunlight glistening off each bloom and when I looked more closely, my breath was taken away by the beauty….they literally glowed!

Painted from a photograph taken by a friend, the interior of this cactus bloom seemed more like some kind of undersea creature you’d see scuba diving than a flower…very mysterious.

A white poppy that had so many delightful curves, shapes, crinkles and shadows. I started this painting with a very loose abstract underpainting, and many of the drips and drops show through to the finished painting, making the flower look almost as if it's crying.

After painting a number of brightly colored florals, I looked forward to painting with a subtler palette. I was amazed at the variety of colors actually present within this beautiful "white" gardenia and enjoyed the challenge of not only discovering the many subtle color shifts, but also representing them on the canvas in a believable manner.

Artist self-portrait ~ NF
Every artist should paint a self portrait....or at least that's what "they" say. I decided that I should paint a self portrait that was reflective of me and my paintings. I decided a macro view of my eye would be fun and used a 10x hand held mirror to see my subject clearly. I decided that the reflection in my eye should be of those things important to me - you'll see my faith, this painting sitting on the easel and three bumps to the right which are the heads of my son Max (he had long hair then), my husband Tony, and my son Alex.
The view north from my studio. Gorgeous!

This painting was done as a donation to the silent auction for Tucson's Christian Youth Theatre's 10th Anniversary Gala (production of Mary Poppins). It was a lot of fun to do and incorporated a text application of song lyrics to the canvas using a gloss medium transfer method, glitter and acrylic on canvas.

Breath of Fresh Air is dedicated to my mom, Mary Sikula, who passed away April 3rd, 2010. Although advanced in age, her death was very sudden and came as quite a shock to all of her kids. In addition to the stress of dealing with her death, travel and funeral arrangements, I was also in the middle of rehearsals for a play that I was performing in and that was opening just 3 weeks later. I decided to do something nice for myself and scheduled a massage. That one hour of relaxation and pampering was just what I needed.
Now, you're probably wondering what all that has to do with this painting...
The exhaust fan you see in Breath of Fresh Air was the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes in that dimly lit room. It was strangely beautiful and I spent a long time staring at it....I knew it would be difficult to try to paint strictly from memory, so I tried to snap a photo of it on my cell phone, but as you can imagine, that wasn't very successful...but thanks to PhotoShop, I was able to find the basic shapes and shadows.
I knew I wanted the finished painting to have "salmony"
highlights, so I chose quinacridone magenta and
mineral orange as my primary colors. In total I used a
limited palette of titanium white, quinacridone
magenta, a complimentary color chrome oxide green,
mineral orange and a complimentary color medium
cerulean blue. The underpainting was a mixture of all 4
colors with various amounts of titanium white for value.
and now you know.....
The rest of the story.
